BEST TIME TO VISIT JORDAN: PLAN THE ULTIMATE JORDAN ADVENTURE [2023]

15th January 2023

The first step to planning the ultimate Jordan adventure is to know the best time to visit Jordan.

With its incredible landscapes, rich culture, and fascinating history, Jordan deserves a spot on every traveler’s bucket list. Whether you’re looking to explore the ancient Roman ruins of Jerash, visit the iconic Petra, or wander through the world’s lowest point on Earth at the Dead Sea, Jordan has something for everyone.

But if you want to have the best possible experience, it’s essential to pick the best time of year to visit Jordan. That’s because the weather in this part of the world can be extreme – especially in the desert regions. It’s also worth noting that there’s a big difference between North and South Jordan when it comes to climate.

When planning your trip to Jordan, keep in mind that during Jordan’s peak season (which usually coincides with better weather) prices tend to be higher and crowds larger.

So let’s take a look at what makes each season special so you can decide which one suits your travel needs best!

When Is the Best Time to Visit Jordan?

Peak Season in Jordan

Visiting Jordan during the spring or autumn is a great time for travelers looking to explore all that this amazing country has to offer.

From March through May, the weather in Jordan is mild and pleasant, making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Popular tourist sites such as Petra and Jerash are bustling with activity during this time, offering visitors plenty of opportunities to mingle with locals and other travelers.

I solo traveled around Jordan for several weeks in April and had great weather! But be sure to check when Ramadan is – more on that further down.

From September through November, temperatures also remain mild, with cooler evenings. This is the most popular time for visitors to come to Jordan and you can expect larger crowds at tourist attractions.

Keep in mind that prices tend to be higher during peak season and it’s best to book your accommodations and tours in advance if you want a spot and a better price. If you’re planning to drive around Jordan, you’ll want to rent your car in advance too.

Hotels tend to be more expensive during peak season, and can even fill up, so it’s best to book ahead if you plan on traveling at this time of year.

With its incredible landscapes, rich culture, and fascinating history, Jordan truly comes alive in the spring and autumn! These may be the best months to visit Jordan for you.

Low Season in Jordan

If you’re looking to explore Jordan on a budget or without crowds, then the low season is the best time to travel to Jordan!

Winter and summer can be quite extreme in terms of temperature, but they offer great opportunities for budget travelers.

During winter (December-February), temperatures are cold in most parts of the country, with the exception of the Gulf of Aqaba and Jordan Valley which will be warmer. If you don’t mind bundling up for the cold winds and possibly even possibly some snow, then you could end up having some of Jordan’s most famous sites all to yourself, as winter sees the fewest tourists to Jordan.

Keep in mind that some hiking trails and popular sites may be seasonal, or may close due to extreme weather conditions or if there’s a risk of flash flooding. One of my favorite experiences in Jordan was hiking the Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib – but this trail is typically only open from April through October, so when you are planning when to visit Jordan it is something you’d like to do.

But if you have a bit of flexibility and patience, you will have a unique experience in Jordan without battling other tourists for pictures, and likely save money in the process.

Summer (June-August) often has extremely hot weather with temperatures reaching up to 40°C in some areas like the Gulf of Aqaba, but it’s still a good time to visit if you’re looking for cheaper prices. A lot of travelers avoid Jordan at this time of year, but if you can handle the heat, you could end up seeing places like Petra without huge crowds, and you will likely find some great deals too!

Best Time to Visit Petra

Petra is an ancient city located in Jordan, and it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. This incredible archaeological site has been around for thousands of years, and it’s filled with amazing ruins that are sure to take your breath away.

With its stunning architecture, rich history, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, Petra is a must-visit destination for anyone looking for an unforgettable experience in Jordan.

The best time to visit Petra depends on what you’re hoping to get out of your trip – whether you’re looking for mild temperatures or fewer crowds – but no matter when you go there’s something special waiting for you at this magical place!

The best time to visit Petra in terms of weather is during the spring or autumn. From March through May and September through November, temperatures are mild and pleasant, making these seasons ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Keep in mind that since these are the most popular times to visit, you won’t have Petra all to yourself. During this time of year, popular tourist sites such as Petra are bustling with activity. Prices tend to be higher during peak season too, but if you book in advance you can often find some great deals – something worth considering when planning when to visit Jordan.

I often try to visit popular tourist destinations in the shoulder season, or the month immediately before and after the season with the best weather. Following this advice, the best month to visit Jordan would be either March or December. If you go in late March or early December, you may get lucky with ok weather on some days, and there will likely be fewer tourists since it’s not during the peak season.

Another tip for visiting Petra is to go as soon as they open in the morning and also visit in the late afternoon before closing – the giant tour groups that come as day trips will likely be gone during those times, so you can get to some of the best photo spots before or after they do.

And a lot of tourists don’t make it to the upper Treasury viewpoint or to the Monastery, which requires a bit of a hike, so once you get away from the Treasury and Siq, the crowds won’t be so bad.

Weather in Jordan

Jordan is a small country with an average of 300 days of sunshine and four distinct seasons, making it the perfect destination for your next adventure.

The majority of Jordan is desert but its climates vary by region, from a Mediterranean climate in the west to a hot desert climate in the southeast.

Winter can be quite cold in some areas, while summer temperatures often reach 40°C or higher in places like Aqaba.

Rainfall is low throughout most parts of Jordan, averaging 10-18 inches (250-450 millimeters) per year, mainly in northwestern Jordan. With such varied weather conditions throughout different regions and times of the year, it’s important to factor in weather when deciding the best time to travel to Jordan.

Jordan in the Spring (March-May)

The spring season in Jordan is one of the best times for travelers to explore the country.

With mild temperatures, blooming wildflowers, and fewer crowds than in peak season, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy all that this amazing destination has to offer.

During the months of March through May, you can expect warm days with clear skies perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities like hiking and exploring ancient ruins. The rainy season usually ends around late March or early April so you won’t have to worry about wet weather getting in the way of your plans either!

During my visit in April, I had wonderful weather. It only rained for a little while one afternoon when I was hiking in Ajloun, which is in the north of Jordan.

Plus, if you’re looking to save some money while still having an incredible experience, this is a great time to visit Jordan as prices tend to be lower than during peak season. So pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable springtime Jordan adventure!

Jordan in the Autumn (September-November)

For many, Autumn is the best time to visit Jordan!

Visiting Jordan in the fall is an ideal time for travelers looking to experience the best of Jordanian culture and landscapes. From September to November, temperatures are cool but comfortable during the day (highs of 88°F/31°C) and mild at night (lows around 68°F/20°C).

September is the last month of summer, officially, but temperatures are beginning to cool off. By the end of September, it is officially falling.

Plus, this is an ideal time to witness Jordan’s stunning landscapes turn green again as the first rains fall in October. This is a great time to do walks, hikes, or explore Wadi Rum.

Also, if you’re looking for some of the best diving conditions in the Red Sea, this is an ideal time as the Red Sea is at its warmest during September. Make sure to keep your eyes open and maybe you’ll spot eagle rays and turtles while you’re there.

However, keep in mind that this is also a popular time to visit Jordan so prices and crowds will be higher than usual.

So, if you’re looking for moderate temperatures, stunning landscapes, and great diving conditions, then the fall months are the best time to go to Jordan.

Jordan in the Winter (December-February)

From unusual festivals to snow-covered landscapes, here are just some of the reasons why visiting Jordan in the winter should be on your travel list.

First and foremost, the winter months are the best time for budget travelers. Prices are lower and there are fewer tourists so you can get some great deals on accommodation and activities.

But that’s not all – this is also a great time to experience Jordan without the crowds. Imagine having Petra almost all to yourself!

Plus, this is the best time to visit one of Jordan’s winter festivals, the Aqaba Traditional Arts Festival in January/February.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that temperatures can get chilly, can snow in winter and some hiking trails will be closed for the season, especially those at risk of flash floods. Also, January is usually the rainiest time of year so you’ll want to dress warmly with plenty of layers and bring an umbrella and some waterproof clothes.

Overall, if you don’t mind cold weather then winter is definitely a great time to visit Jordan!

Jordan During Ramadan

Jordan during Ramadan is an incredibly special time to visit. Every year, Muslims in Jordan and around the world observe the holy month of Ramadan – a month-long religious event where they give up food and drink from dawn till dusk to practice spiritual discipline and become closer to God. The dates of Ramadan vary by approximately ten days each year as the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle.

During this sacred time, visitors will be able to experience unique cultural traditions that are rarely seen elsewhere. From iftar meals shared between strangers to late-night suhoor picnics under the stars, there’s something for everyone during this amazing period of celebration!

If you’re really lucky like I was, you may be invited by a local family to join in on their end-of-Ramadan celebrations. One of the perks of traveling around Jordan solo is that I got invited by two different families to join in on the special celebration, an experience I will never forget!

Visiting Jordan during Ramadan can be an incredible experience for travelers looking to learn about and experience the culture during this sacred time. However, there are some downsides that travelers should consider before planning their trip.

First, services and hours of operation may be affected as many businesses close early or take a break in observance of Ramadan. I was in Jordan at the end of the Ramadan holiday, and had trouble a couple of times finding a restaurant that was open for lunch – so be sure to have extra snacks if you go during this time.

Additionally, alcohol sales are prohibited and even non-alcoholic drinks may be restricted. My friend and I were able to find a bar that would sell us a bottle of wine to take with us to Wadi Rum, where we sipped wine in secret under the stars. And when I was scuba diving in Aqaba, my scuba instructor and I found an Irish pub that was selling alcohol only indoors. You just have to be discreet and respectful.

So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure in Jordan, why not plan your trip during Ramadan?
